My Monk: A Typographic Novel
by Elizabeth Dembrowsky
Illustrated by Claire E. Keys
First printing: 2009, Heliotrope Books
A young, idealistic American writing student arrives in England for graduate school and finds herself involved in an unlikely friendship with a religious and temperamental Romanian poet. Harriet – a liberal atheist – draws closer and closer to her fellow graduate student, attracted to him because of their differences.
The novel was written in its own lexicon of typographic protocols. Every page is different.
A truly “Typographic Novel,” it includes nearly 90 footnotes of anecdotes and commentary, hundreds of indented parenthetical phrases and a dozen original poems. Even the cover illustration by Claire E. Keys is composed entirely of type.
